What if?

Wednesday, 8th March is International Women’s Day, and before men start moaning, Men’s Day is 19th November, every year too!

International Women’s Day began in the USA in 1909, one hundred and fourteen years ago. It is true that since then women have gained the right to vote, are fully serving members of the armed forces, as well as the police force. And recently I heard that they have been allowed to wear trousers in Paris. It was illegal until 2013!

Why is it important to have a Women’s Day?

I will tell you. It is because……..

‘Women and girls around the world are still married as children or trafficked into forced labour and sex slavery. They are refused access to education and political participation; some are trapped in conflicts where rape is a weapon of war.

Around the world, deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth are needlessly high, and women are prevented from making deeply personal choices in their private lives.’

Copied from the website of the Human Rights Watch

This. Is. Why.

Here in the UK, in September 2021, there were 40,572 reported cases of sexual assault against women, only 1.3% led to the perpetrator being charged. In the year 2020 only 1,717 cases of female rape led to prosecution.

Staggering, isn’t it?

So, yes, it is more than important to have a Women’s Day.

If women were truly free and equal, where they are safe to walk in streets and parks alone, where they are free to wear the clothes of their choice and where they can choose their life style without criticism or judgement, then all people would be safe.

When we make the world a safe place for women, we make the world a safe place for all.

Women can change this!

If women worked together, instead of bitching against each other, embraced each other, supported each other, praised each other, if we stop competing against each other, what might happen then?

What if women stood together? What if an ‘army’ of women, old, young, black, white, gay, trans, disabled all stood together on Women’s Day and say NO to violence, to hatred, to discrimination, to bigotry, to envy?

What if women were to gather, hundreds, thousands, millions of us, gather together in Red Square Moscow?

What if we did and we told the people of Russia just exactly what is happening in the world, opened their eyes to the truth? Show them that they are being manipulated and fed untruths about the rest of the world, as well as the lies they have been fed about Ukraine.

Would the Kremlin arrest us all? Would they mow us down with their tanks?

What might happen if we did?

What if women were to gather in their hundreds, thousands, millions, together in Kiev, Ukraine?

What if we did and we defied the Russian military and cried no more oppression and war?

What might happen if we did?

What if women were to gather in Afghanistan - hundreds, thousands, millions of us? Wearing clothes, we chose to wear, dancing and singing. What if we did and we told the people of Afghanistan that women have rights, that they we are all equal, that no one has the right to impose laws or harm innocent people for their sexuality under some archaic religious belief?

What would the Taliban do? Would they be able to beat all the women with their sticks? Would they arrest us all?

What might happen if we did?

What if women were to gather in Pakistan? Hundreds, thousands, millions of us. What if we gathered all of the young girls that would be forced into marriage, all women who would be forced into marriage and held them to us? What if we did and we told them they could chose for themselves, that marriage of young girls is wrong, that forcing anyone against their will is wrong?

What might happen it we did?

What if women were to gather together, anywhere and everywhere, in the world where there is discrimination, anger, misogyny, inequality, denial of human rights?

What if we did, we if said no more!? No more!

What if we create a world where everyone is equal, no matter whether female, male, gay, bi, straight, transgender, no matter what colour of skin, or body shape?

What if we create a world were women can walk in safety and freedom, wearing what she chooses, doing what she chooses for herself? What might happen if we did? What might happen?

All would be safe; all would be equal and all would be in peace.

If women gathered and said NO MORE!

Happy International Women’s Day.
